Jason's Bio

Joel Massicot

Jason began taking salsa dance lessons (On 1) at a studio in New York about four years ago.  He stayed at this studio for a little over a year, but after being impressed by some mambo dancers he saw at a club, he left the studio and started taking mambo lessons with Gabe Perez at a studio called Dance On2.  After 6 months there, he became an itinerant mambo student—taking lessons with several mambo instructors.

Over the subsequent year and a half, he took lessons from, and was influenced by, the following instructors: Jimmy Anton, Almyra Ayos, Claudine Curry, Carlos Konig, Delille Thomas, and Eddie Torres.  During that time, Almyra Ayos asked him to join her performance group, Casa de la Salsa, which he did for five months.

In August of 2004, he moved to Boston, and—as he did in New York—he went dancing as much as possible.  A few months later, Ana and Joel invited him to join the performance group they were forming.

Jason joined Sabor Masacote Dance Company in September 2004.  When asked what he loves about salsa, Jason states: "I'm unable to list or even express all the reasons I love dancing mambo.  It begins with my love for salsa music and the joy I feel dancing to it and connecting with dance partners.  I also dance mambo because it's challenging.  Learning turn patterns and shines are difficult for me and therefore it’s rewarding to do moves I once struggled with.  Finally, I keep dancing mambo because it's so rich and I know that I have much more to learn."
